The use of containers can be seen within a general context of implementing an ‘Enterprise PaaS’. Container technologies are now a component part of many PaaS suites.

Enterprise PaaS refers to the internal application of the Platform as a Service model, with the goal of boosting software productivity through standardized developer tools and common components.

PaaS can be utilized via public or private Cloud deployment models. Public Cloud services include Microsoft Azure and Google, and vendor software for building your own in-house PaaS includes Cloud Foundry and Red Hat Openshift.

In the BrightTALK webinar Docker aPaaS for Enterprise Innovation the presenter describes how Application PaaS approaches can be achieved with Docker containers, within a goal of boosting innovation.

Vendors like Cloudify can be used to orchestrate Docker, as CTO Nati Shalom describes in this slide deck: Application Centric DevOps.

From Concept to Cash – Building software innovation factories
On an even broader basis the adoption of these platforms and tools can be viewed from a perspective of systemic-level transformation, enabling faster and more reliable software practices that in turn accelerate business innovation.

Although MIT makes the specific point that the Platform Business Model is exactly that, a business model not a technology, there is naturally a clear and powerful link with the Cloud model ‘PaaS’ – Platform as a Service.

This offers literally that, a Platform as a service, and so it can play a central component part in enabling the Platform Business Model, and thereby play a direct role in enabling new models of innovation.

In ‘Essential Elements of Enterprise PaaS‘ Pivotal lay out a recipe for what constitutes Enterprise PaaS, and in ‘PaaS: Open for Business‘, describe the essential ingredient:

“Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is a key enabler of software-driven innovation – facilitating rapid iteration and developer agility. It comprises a set of tools, libraries and services for deploying, managing and scaling applications in the cloud. Adopting an enterprise-grade, multi-cloud PaaS solution frees developers to create game-changing web and mobile applications. It also allows these applications to scale across cloud environments, based on the business need.”

Better synthesis of both software development and infrastructure operations (DevOps) speeds up the overall cycle of new feature deployment.

In this blog Stackify make this great observation, that Agile and DevOps combine to holistically address the full life-cyle of translating business ideas into working code running in the Cloud hosting delivery environment.

Agile software practices are introduced in the Agile Manifesto, and described here by the here by the Scrum Alliance explaining the relationship to ‘DevOps’, the integration of software development and operations management. As the vendor DB Maesro describes in this blog, DevOps builds on the software development best practices like version control and Application Lifecycle Management, with additional functions to further automate the deployment to Cloud procedures.

Expanding software innovation throughput
This is also often described as the “Concept to Cash” process, the core mechanic of generating new ideas and turning them into revenue-generating business services of some kind.

Improving the throughput of this capability is then logically how organizations can increase innovation rates, how they can bring more new products to market faster.

Considering this as an equation of throughput capacity highlights expertise from non-technical business domains, most notably the Theory of Constraints, and how it can be applied to this software innovation life-cycle.

This is both an enormously simple and powerful principle, that centres around identifying the primary bottlenecks in any system of production. It began in manufacturing but can be generalized to any scenario.
