Evolution of Mobile Computing: Cloud Computing 2011

Key concepts of mobile cloud computing

I wrote an article back in 2004 called "Evolution of Mobile Computing" that I thought would be useful to modernize for 'Cloud 2011,' mapping it to what progress there has been to date and how that lights up what's hot right now.

The main points emphasize just how much "the Cloud" is about so much more than just virtualization and utility computing. Really the main points in this article were about a universal "dataweb"; it's more about improving intelligent data sharing between applications, which I actually think will be an offshoot trend driven by the Cloud hosting wave that ultimately comes to be the main benefit that people respond to.

For example:

  • Identity Authentication - A key recent development was the launch of the OASIS 'Identity in the Cloud' standards project.
  • Personal Data Ecosystem - Has now been formalized through organizations like Personal Data Ecosystem.
  • Intelligent Data Services - Recently the term 'inter-cloud' was coined to describe the Cloud integration and inter-operation efforts

Merging of these fields with the Cloud industry is nicely touched on by identity web expert Drummon Reed, discussing the idea of a 'Personal Cloud' in this blog here.

These combinations of technologies will enable the new Cloud services I described, such as "My Documents Everywhere" - A sub-set of Personal Cloud Services that are intended for office users. The killer Cloud apps will be those that make publishing our key personal data and work files online easier while also more secure.

Making it possible to access these same files from iPhones and other mobile devices will be key drivers of user uptake for both mobile providers as well as Cloud App hosters.
